SPC Click Flooring Installation Guide

2026-06-05

SPC click lock flooring is widely used in residential, commercial, and renovation projects due to its waterproof, moisture-resistant, and easy-to-install properties. Although SPC flooring features a glue-free click lock system and is relatively simple to install, achieving a flat, durable, and long-lasting floor without buckling requires proper preparation and attention to installation details.

This guide covers installation preparation, installation procedures, cutting techniques, and common mistakes to avoid, helping you achieve a professional SPC flooring installation.

Ⅰ. Installation Preparation

1. Tool Preparation

Before installation, prepare the following tools:

Utility knife, rubber mallet, pull bar, triangle square or carpenter's square, measuring tape, cutting board, moisture barrier underlayment, transition strips or skirting boards, silicone adhesive or construction adhesive.

Having the proper tools ready will improve installation efficiency and help prevent lock damage or cutting errors.

2. Base Surface Treatment

Before installation, ensure that the subfloor is:

  • Clean and free of dust
  • Free of sand, gravel, and debris
  • Free of noticeable bumps or depressions
  • Completely dry

SPC click lock flooring requires a relatively flat surface. Uneven surfaces can lead to squeaking, lock joint stress, broken locking systems, and floor bulging over time.

It is recommended to use a 2-meter straightedge to check floor flatness, with a maximum variation of 2–3 mm.

If the subfloor is uneven, it should be leveled using cement mortar or self-leveling compound before installation.

3. Acclimating the Flooring

Do not install click SPC flooring immediately after delivery.

The recommended practice is to unpack the flooring and place it flat indoors for 24–48 hours, allowing the material to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity.

This helps minimize expansion, contraction, warping, or gaps after installation.

4. Check Door Clearance

Before installation, verify that there is sufficient clearance under doors.

If clearance is insufficient, door casings or door bottoms should be trimmed before installation to ensure smooth operation afterward.

SPC flooring is typically 4–6 mm thick. When combined with the moisture barrier and transition trims, a clearance of approximately 8–10 mm is generally required.

Ⅱ. SPC Flooring Installation Steps

1. Install the Moisture Barrier

Installation requirements:

  • Lay the moisture barrier flat and evenly.
  • Align the seams properly without overlapping.
  • Seal all joints with waterproof tape.

The moisture barrier is a critical part of SPC flooring installation. Many installation issues result from overlapping underlayment.

Overlapping creates uneven areas beneath the flooring, which can cause uneven pressure on the locking system and eventually lead to lock failure.

2. Determine the Installation Pattern

Common SPC flooring installation patterns include:

  • Straight Lay Pattern: Easy to install with approximately 3–5% material waste.
  • 1/3 Offset (369 Pattern): The second row starts with a board offset by one-third of its length, and the third row is offset by two-thirds before repeating the sequence. This pattern creates a more natural and visually appealing layout with approximately 3–5% material waste.
  • Herringbone Pattern: Offers a premium and elegant appearance but requires more installation skill. Material waste is typically around 7–10%. This pattern is often used in commercial projects and high-end residential interiors.

3. Begin Installation

It is generally recommended to start installation from the side nearest the doorway, with the short side facing the wall and the long side facing outward.

Cut and arrange the planks according to the selected installation pattern.

4. Locking System Connection

The correct method for connecting SPC flooring planks is to align the locking profiles and insert the plank at approximately a 45-degree angle.

Connect the short side first, then press down the long side.

When a distinct "click" sound is heard, the locking mechanism is fully engaged.

If a plank remains raised, the lock is likely not fully connected. Do not force it down by hand. Instead, gently tap it into place using a rubber mallet to avoid damaging the locking system.

5. Leave Expansion Gaps

Although SPC flooring is highly stable, expansion gaps are still necessary to accommodate temperature-related movement.

During installation:

Leave a 5–10 mm expansion gap along walls and fixed structures.

Use scrap pieces as spacers to maintain consistent spacing.

For large installation areas, expansion joints should be added every 5–8 meters, or transition strips should be used to divide sections.

Failure to provide adequate expansion space may result in buckling or floor lifting over time.

6. Cutting Techniques

Measure the required size, score the plank several times with a utility knife, then place it on the edge of a knee or cutting board and snap it cleanly along the score line.

For narrow edges, door frames, or irregular cuts, use a pull bar and rubber mallet to assist installation and achieve a cleaner finish.

7. Finishing and Edge Treatment

After all flooring has been installed, complete the finishing work.

Common finishing methods include:

Installing skirting boards

Installing metal transition strips

Installing doorway threshold trims

Transition strips can be secured using silicone adhesive or construction adhesive.

For a cleaner appearance, decorator's caulk can be applied where skirting boards meet the wall.

Ⅲ. Important Installation Tips

1. Keep the Subfloor Completely Clean

Sand, dust, and debris are among the leading causes of floor bulging and noise issues.

Even small particles can continuously apply pressure to the underside of the flooring during use.

Always vacuum and thoroughly clean the subfloor before installation.

2. Avoid Excessive Force on the Locks

The locking system is the most critical component of SPC flooring.

Incorrect installation angles or misalignment can cause whitening, deformation, or future joint separation.

Always use gentle tapping for adjustment rather than forcing planks into position.

3. Avoid Continuous Whole-House Installation

Many homeowners prefer a seamless appearance throughout the entire house.

However, this can make future repairs more difficult and increase the risk of expansion-related issues.

It is generally recommended to separate rooms using transition strips or install flooring in independent sections.

4. Protect the Floor Before Moving Furniture

After installation, apply a protective covering before bringing furniture into the room.

Extra care should be taken with heavy furniture such as sofas, refrigerators, and large cabinets.

Anti-slip pads are recommended under heavy furniture to reduce long-term stress on the locking joints.

5. Follow the Correct Renovation Sequence

SPC flooring should be installed during the final stage of interior finishing.

This minimizes dust contamination, surface scratches, and moisture exposure while improving long-term floor stability.

Recommended sequence:

Painting completed → Cabinets and doors installed → SPC flooring installation

Conclusion

Although SPC click lock flooring is relatively easy to install, the final result depends heavily on proper installation practices. Base surface preparation, moisture protection, locking system engagement, and expansion gap planning are all essential factors affecting the floor's performance and lifespan.

A properly installed SPC floor not only delivers a clean and attractive appearance but also helps prevent common issues such as buckling, squeaking, and joint separation. For large commercial projects or complex layouts, professional installation is recommended to ensure the best long-term performance.
